Route of Caldera de Bandama
The walking route around Caldera de Bandama is located between the villages of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Brígida, very close to the east coast of Gran Canaria. This Natual Monument of great natural wealth was formed five billion years ago next to the old Pico de Bandama volcano. The caldera is 215 meters deep, 575 meters high and more than one thousand meters in diameter. In the point where begins the path, there is an information map as the one you have in the resources section at the right side of the website.
Hiking the closest route near La Palma de Gran Canaria
From the starting point the path starts going down 100m having the to left side the view of the inside of the Caldera. The trail is almost 3km long and is possible to reach the inside of the Caldera that seems an oasis in the middle of a volcanic landscape. In the north side of Bandama is possible to observe big walls above the green lands of the bottom of the Caldera.
Jardín Botanico Canario Viera y Clavijo
Close to Caldera de Bandama is located the most beautiful botanical garden of Gran Canaria, the Canarian botanic Garden of Viera y Clavijo.
There are really nice paths arround the whole garden.
-Avoid all kind of canyons and steep terrains in case of rain. Though the canyon can be dry it can turn into a strong river with waterfalls in seconds.
-Do not drink from streams or springs, except those that are marked as drinking water.
-In case of setting up a tent to avoid the camping areas and nearby without permission and notice that is illegal to set up a tent in Spain. If it is wanted to take the risk, set up the tent in a remote place at sunset and wake up early to avoid forest rangers. During summertime there are more controls.

How to get there with public transportation:
For arriving at Caldera de Bandama has to be taken the bus 311 from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that drives directly to the top of Bandama. The same bus runs between Bandama and the Botanical Garden Viera y Clavijo.
In all the island is forbidden to set a tent freely. There are only a few free camping with really basic facilities like toilet and drinking water.
There are many airbnb and hostels where you can rest near Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
