Los Tilos laurisilva forest and waterfall

Hiking in Los Tilos is the most beautiful short hike in La Palma thanks to its particular microclimate that offers a beautiful jungle landscape. Walking in Los Tilos is a great way to get in touch with the wild nature that characterizes the north and west coast of La Isla Bonita. Barranco del Agua has one of the most protected laurisilva forest of Europe and has really impressive waterfalls surrounded by an ambushed landscape.
Near the parking there is an Interpretation Centre where it explains the natural values of the surroundings. This surrounding are ideal for walking, and offer good hiking experiences.
The path is not marked but is as well impossible to get lost in the narrow canyon that has a physical end at a big wall where if you are lucky is possible to see a waterfall. Although there is a pipe that goes over the canyon it’s not an inconvenience because the path is extremely beautiful.

Starting the hike in Los Tilos Interpretation center

From the Interpretation Center, there is a small path beside the right side of the river bed. This path is well preserved and shows how locals collected water. The path crosses several tunnels before arriving at the part where the canyon is wider. Vegetation in this place is amazing and quite similar to a subtropical jungle thanks to the Laurisilva.

Following the Ravine Barranco del Agua

As it is followed the canyon, this becomes wider at some places and very narrow at others. Waterfalls are falling from the top of the walls of the canyon making even more spectacular the walk. There is a point after 5 minutes walk where there is a small wall that has to be climbed with help of the pipes that pass by the wall. After passing over the wall, one arrives at the end of the route when there is a small waterfall that is surrounded by walls and there is no other way to keep hiking and the way back is clearly seen that is only possible following the same route backwards.

Recommendations

-Be careful with the weather conditions because it can change quickly and in an unexpected way, especially during winter. In case of rain or other inclement weather do not hike around the area or be very careful if you decide to take this risk. Before going to hike check out the conditions of the paths in Senderos de La Palma website.

-In case of setting up a tent to avoid the camping areas and nearby without permission and notice that is illegal to set up a tent in Spain. If it is wanted to take the risk, set up the tent in a remote place at sunset and wake up early to avoid forest rangers. During summertime, there are more controls.

-Your safety is our concern but it is your responsibility. Hiking in nature requires a minimum of preparation and wearing warm clothes and proper boots always with us.
