Overview

Hiking to Fløya, the best lookout over Tromso, is one of the best things you can do if you are visiting the city. From a high of 671m, Fløya is considered as one of the must do in Norway’s Arctic city. Reaching the top of the mountain gives the chance to realize how many small and large islands are spread in the area and you will appreciate the beauty of the fjord of Tromsø, the gateway of the Arctic.

Starting the hike in Tromsdalen

To find the starting point of this route is recommended to follow the indications to Sherpatrappa with Google Maps. From this point, the trail heads to the south-east gaining elevation quickly. After a few minutes is found a sign to Fjellheisen and Floya via Aksla. This is the fastest way to go to the top of the cable car that can be taken from the bottom of the mountain.

Arriving at Storstein and Floya

Once it is reached the top of Fjellheisen (cable car) is seen a big wall that is considered as the best viewpoint of Tromsø. At the top of the cable car, one has to head up the hill to the south passing near a small mountain cabin called Steinbøhytta and the trail to the top of the Fløya is clearly seen.

Way back

On the way back is possible to follow the same route or to take any other of the multiples paths there are in the north face of Fløya.

Recommendations

-Be careful with the weather conditions because it can change quickly and in an unexpected way. It can get cold quickly so is recommended to wear always with us some warm clothes.

-In case of setting up a tent be respectful with nature and locals. You can take advantage of the Norwegian law “allemansratten” to set up a tent almost wherever you want but keep on mind that nature doesn’t care about our egos. We should show as much respect and take as much caution as possible. Indrearne at BBC

-Your safety is our concern but is your responsibility. Hiking in high mountain areas requires a minimum of preparation and wearing warm clothes and proper boots always with us.
